In order to “season” a new cast iron waffler you brush Crisco or vegetable oil thoroughly over the waffle plates then stick the waffler in a pre-heated oven for an hour, repeat that process one more time, and by morning you will have a good to go non-stick waffle maker. When you first try your hand at old-fashioned waffle-making it may not be a big success, but don’t be concerned because you only need a few tries to get it right. At first you pre-heat each side of the iron waffle maker, then coat the inside plates in butter or vegetable oil, pour in the batter, bake each side for about two and a half minutes or so, allow it to cool a minute and you are ready for a delicious treat. Warm and fluffy on the inside, golden brown on the outside, waffles make a marvelous breakfast when served with syrup and butter, and a yummy dessert when served a la mode.
